O Superman

putting the finishing touches on a research paper i'm writing about laurie anderson.
specifically this

because it is even more amazing to me now then it was when i was 6 years old... and that doesn't happen very often with most things.

benny & joon

that movie is on tv right now.

the song that plays in the opening credits is "500 miles" which makes me think of my friend Marguerite, who coincidentally is in town and we're going to get together tomorrow for the first time in oh say... 10 years??

benny & joon

also wrote about the peculiar nature of the missed communication/ connection between characters in this movie one year ago (almost exactly.)

something kind of nice about this feeling right now. like one of those cliche "i've come full circle" moments. i looked back at that blog entry from 10.07.08 to re read what i'd written about benny & joon and everything else.

seems like so long ago...

i'll be better about blogging. the way i used to.
try to be better.
be better.
better.

take that.

studio visit today with Ward Shelley.

without going into too much detail i'll just say that it went well and my ever looming sense of self doubt was blown away for a while...

apparently i am making some "smart decisions" with this new piece.

i'll post better pics and a link to the video later, but for now this is all you get:

final reviews

i can't believe it's over.
like... OVER over.
not just the term is over.

no more late nights in the white stag... although technically we're still students until what... the 12th?

movies in the screening room anyone?

reviews went well.
really well.
there were only 2 faculty members who i hadn't ever really talked about my work with... so i was expecting a lot of the same feedback.
wrong.
some nice new insights and critical commentary.
Bryson told me later that he learned some new things about me.

the show was great.
i'm so pleased.
it was nice to talk about my work with people who aren't as familiar with it as my fabulous classmates and professors.

really nice. unexpectedly nice... : )

i got a lot of positive feedback and some nice ides for possible directions to take in grad school.
GRAD SCHOOL.

how does it all happen soo fast?

some other beginning's end...

i haven't written much about inspirations or process lately.
for some reason this term has been strangely difficult for me.

i've written much (in my 'paper blog') about my frustrations with trying to figure out what the logical next steps are... as if it's prescribed.
looking at that i realized that i'm still in a super tentative place about my practice and i have a long way to go before being completely comfortable about just doing what it is that i want to do.
i had hoped that by the end of this year i would have gotten over some of this stuff. maybe it never goes away. some say it doesn't.
perhaps the less personal work is, the easier it is to offer up/ talk about/ take criticism.
i dunno.
and i wish i did.

so here are the things i'm working with.

jackpot, sugar is my new favorite in a long list of stolen statements. the sampling of my auditory catalog. it is a fragment, but clearly the juicy center of a larger statement....    when i look at it it makes me feel sassy. it wasn't heard with a comma, but because when i hear "a good one" it feels like i scored, i decided there needed to be a comma.
as if i had had won the prize-  "jackpot, sugar"  (me being "sugar" of course.)

burnt happiness ok so sometimes these stolen statements come from the people close to me.  this one i love because obviuosly- 'burnt happiness'  is such a strange juxtaposition. also because it came from andrew who was talking about the smell of the laser cut wood that he used to make his mother's day gift for his mom. he was so pleased with himself. again... these things stay with me for a number of different reasons. this one had everything to do with the moment.

plays me very carefully originally from 'he plays me very carefully,'  i thought i would offer a level playing field and leave the 'he' out of it.
side note: when i told a friend about leaving the 'he' out of it she looked and me and said "now there's a statement."
so you might end up seeing that one in lights too....

what if we let it kind of started it all. okay, i love jackpot, sugar but this one is my favorite. so super loaded that it sends me spinning. it's simple, yet complex. straight up yet cryptic. it begins one dialogue while ending another... with intrigue.

that's better.

light it up

so...

i've purchased a couple of fluorescent light fixtures to use as light box displays....
for signs.
for the words i stole from other people.

and i think i have finally arrived at a satisfactory solution.
much thanks to:
my pal andrew who really- never lets me down
and that professor (i forget his name...) whose head is filled with all kinds of great ideas that he so generously shares....

now to get the vinyl cut and onto my signs.

i can't believe this term is so close to being over.

i can't believe it.
i can't believe it.
i can't believe it.

*sigh*

love letters

i just realized that i don't know my pin number for my debit card without looking at the letters that correspond with the key pad.

for some reason i think that's funny.

or maybe not funny, but interesting?

convert THIS

so...
jadd picked up one of those digital converter boxes so that when "the digital switch" happens i won't be without such blessings as desperate houswives, LOST, or the office...
yes... it's all about me.

the thing is a piece of junk.

the 2 channels that we sort of get... are often a pixelated nightmare.
i'd rather have my 5 fuzzy channels back, please.

what's a girl to do?

do ra me fa so la te do

remember the song?

and the BEST line that goes:

'fa- a long, long way to run...'

yes.

like most porcupines- hard to be soft, tough to be tender

I tremble
They’re gonna eat me alive
If I stumble
They’re gonna eat me alive

Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer
Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft, tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train
Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer

If you’re still alive
My regrets are few.
If my life is mine,
what shouldn’t I do?
I get wherever I’m going,
I get whatever I need
while my blood’s still flowing
and my heart still beats.

Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft, tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train
Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer

Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer.

here we go.

it's monday after reviews and we're in the studio.
we are crazy.

i had to put my earphones in because dom was tormenting me.

THIS is what i got:

old habits die hard.

:D

the morning after the morning after

reviews.

they went well.

i got a lot of complimentary feedback, which is nice. i would have liked some more critical feedback, but i was able to walk away with some good suggestions and good questions to think about for next term.

can i just say really quickly though... that i can hardly believe i got ALL those letters finished?? i'm really glad i pushed through. the results are quite satisfying. being done with that part of it gives me some time to reflect on my progress so far.

general consensus seems to be that i'm on the right track for a good finish next term and that makes me feel pretty good.

AND i was informed that the faculty wants to show my piece when the board of visitors(?) comes to the stag next month.

validation does wonders for my work ethic. not to mention my ego. ; )

so... for the most part i feel pretty good about going into spring term.

anxious, but willing to charge through it.

Cut & Paste drops the ball...

you'd think that a national design competition would be able to handle the glitches and mishaps that inevitably come when working with computers, but when blender crashed on Dom's computer 17 minutes into the competition saturday night, the MC's and judges at cut & paste seemed to be completely unprepared to handle it.

Dom threw his hands up in the air and the audience let out a sympathetic groan.
"oh no!"
"that sucks!"

everything stopped momentarily and we were quickly informed that there were technical difficulties.
duh.

Dom was allowed to start over while the other 3 competitors waited for him to catch up...
i'm not sure if they just couldn't handle letting only 1 person work, but about 6 minutes into Dom's "catching up" the MC's announced that the other 3 competitors would finish their designs using the 3 minutes they had left and that Dom would still have time afterwards to completely catch up.
lies.
the 3 minutes passed.
this would be aproximately 9 minutes for Dom now.
and with much fan fare and cross conversation, which i'm sure was not distracting at all, Dom was given... MAAAYBE 5 more minutes?
7 minutes would be being VERY generous.
either way... he was not given the full 20 minutes he deserved.
Dom was chosen as the audience's favorite and was the 1st runner up despite what must have been an extremely stressful ordeal.

all bias aside, he should have won and we are all super proud...

and he handled it all like a real pro.

congratulations, Dom.

linguaphile

ling.ua.phile
n.
A lover of of languages and words.

(AND between LIKE and LOVE)

the L word

today i OVERHEARD:
"there should be a word between LIKE and LOVE"
and there should be, right? i mean... certain situations definitely call for such a word.

anyway- after not very much time it occurred to me that there are probably SEVERAL words between LIKE and LOVE. perhaps hundreds.
yup.
hundreds.
so....
using The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 4th edition as my sole resource i'm going to install all of the words that are literally between LIKE and LOVE for the pushdot show.  Not sure how, but i really want to see it.

coincidentally, LINDSAY falls between LIKE and LOVE.
how appropriate.

BS

it just occurred to me that there's an entire generation who will most likely NEVER hear a busy signal.

incessant

don't ask HOW this conversation got started, but Andrew and I have decided that:

if there ever existed a pair or more of cousins who were all the product of incest, they wouldn't necessarily be first or second cousins...

they'd be incessant cousins.

we think this works.

aaaaaand that's our saturday night, folks.
